Online poker has been booming since Moneymaker’s sensational victory at the WSOP 2002. Some of the biggest and most well known faces in poker such as Ivey, Hellmuth, Dwan, Doyle Brunson and Howard “the Professor” lederer all play in the USA. It’s because of this that the US has long been the catalyst for online poker over the last few years (at least in my opinion). Think about it, all of the world’s biggest live tournaments and fields are run in the States, including the WSOP. With entry fees starting from $1,000 up to $10,000 in the WSOP NLH Main Event, the UK’s equivalent of the UKGPT (UK Grosvenor Poker Tour) or even the EPT pale in comparison.

If you check any of the latest PocketFives.com rankings over the last few years you’ll notice that around 70%+ of the top 100 tournament leader boards are from players that live in the USA. What’s more, 95% of the guaranteed tournaments featured on this site are from US poker sites such as UB.com, Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars.

That’s why when the Depart of Justice seized the domains of the top 3 US-friendly poker sites (PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and UB.com), it caused catastrophe for millions of poker players and other people that work closely in the industry (affiliates, programmers, operators, payment processors, card rooms, training sites, software providers).

On April 15th, the FBI took down the 3 most prominent US-friendly sites. This was an act that was presumably mostly about money and principle. A lot of US gambling sites have been making money from US players depositing since the UIGEA 2006 fiasco. And I don’t know the rules exactly (since I’m based in the UK) however I’m not sure what the legal clarifications of all the billions of dollars being deposited/withdrawn from gambling sites has been all this time. All 11 of the individuals and owners indicted by the DOJ claim they haven’t done anything wrong. Even the top lawyer minds of the country find it hard to define online poker as an illegal gambling activity since it is mainly a game of skill.

The main problem for US poker players right now is where can they play? Even though the first round of domain seizures was restricted to the three biggest US facing sites PokerStars, UB and Full Tilt Poker, since then a 2nd wave of seizures have closed US gambling sites or they have elected to stop accepting US players themselves. DoylesRoom.com, UB.com, Sportsbook.com, BetUS.com and BetCris.com are just a selection of operators no longer accepting US players. You’ll notices that since Carbon Poker stopped providing rakeback to players there are no sites that offer rakeback to US players any more.

The good news is that you can still play poker online at CarbonPoker.com, LockPoker.com (both operating on the Merge network), Bodog, Power Poker or Cake Poker (which has since agglomerated Victory Poker’s old player base). These are the best sites for poker in the US. Industry speculators and editors at sites like Parttimepoker.com and Gambling999.com claim they expect to see regulated online poker in the US by the end of the year. However realistically, I think you’ be looking at around 2012/13 before you can deposit online through a credit card, given the amount of time it will take for the bill to pass through both houses of congress and for the land-based casinos to launched their own rooms.

The Semi-Bluff

The semi-bluff in poker is one of my favourite tactics in both NLH cash games and tournaments. The semi-bluff is what separates the pros and winning players from the fish at the table. You can semi bluff with so many different hands and in so many different situations that it will make you a completely different player in the long run.

Let’s get started, what is a semi bluff? A semi-bluff is a bluff made when a player is behind and makes a raise, but does so knowing that he has some equity or “outs” in the pot. In contrast to a pure bluff (when the player knows he has 0% chance of winning) a semi-bluff still gives you a chance of winning the pot even if you get called. That’s why it’s called a semi-bluff, because you’re only half-bluffing.

Advantages of Semi-Bluffing

You can semi bluff profitably in so many different situations in poker that if you’re not doing it adding it to your game than you’re probably a poor player. Realistically, the semi bluff has numerous advantages both in winning chips in the short run and building your table image in the long run. I semi-bluff all the time at weak USA online poker sites like Carbon, Bodog and formerly Sportsbook.

Firstly, a semi-bluff gives you the obvious ability to win pots when you’re behind. Just like a pure bluff, if you bet out on the flop K-J-6 with pocket seven’s than there’s every chance that your opponent will fold.

Secondly, semi bluffing allows you to play a wider variety of hands and give you initiative in the pot. A lot of poker is all about “initiative”, putting your opponent under pressure and forcing him to play out of position. The more hands that you raise, draw or slow-play with, the higher the chance that you’ll make your opponent uncomfortable. For example, if you’re in BB and the player in SB checks, than why not raise him off the pot? This is called positional play. The sheer aggression in your strategy always makes you a favourite to win the pot. Even if he calls you have position for the rest of the hand. This means if he calls, misses the flop and then decides to continuation or check the flop, you can simply re-raise him.

Finally, you can mix up your table image and hand range much better by semi bluffing different cards. Having a “balanced range” is one of the most important steps in anything above micro limit poker (well, that and multi-level thinking). By semi-bluffing a large range of your hands including straight draws, flush draws, pocket pairs, top pairs, middle pairs, bottom pairs, over cards (e.g. AJ on 7-10-4 flop) etc, you can mix up your play and make yourself more dangerous. By mixing up your play you can give yourself a weak table image (allowing you to extract maximum call value when you get a premium hand like KK) or a strong table image which allows you to bluff the others at your table more easily.

In terms of when to semi-bluff, I recommend doing so sparingly, usually best when you have at least 30% equity in the pot and position on your opponent (i.e. acting after him). The best situations to semi-bluff are when you have implied odds for hitting your straight or flush draw. I always like semi-bluffing the flop with over cards if there’s only one other opponent in the hand. The opposite of this, the inferior straight/flush draw is the worst type of hands to be semi-bluffing since they have a lot of negative implied odds.

Hottest Girls in Poker

Online poker, although an arguably nerdy and geeky industry, has also given way to some hot girls and sexy branding.

The Calvin Ayre Bodog branding for example has made an awful lot of use of sexy girls and parties in their Bodog affiliate events, including stalls at the LAC and Budabest gaming affiliate conventions.

Bodog is not the only gaming site to home in on the marketing ploys that attractive babes and spiffy advertising can have on players however.

Liv Boeree, one of live poker’s hottest pro poker girls was recently sponsored by UB.com, the world’s 3rd largest US poker site until being scaped away to join to the PokerStars pro team in 2010. Although Boeree has a solid list of credentials that includes an EPT title in 2010 and over $2 million in live tournament winnings, it is more or less obvious that she has got where she is today through physical looks and the marketing gains that come from poker rooms hiring her.

Similar marketing strategies that use good looking women to promote their poker rooms was seen by Victory Poker when they hired 2009 Play mate of the year Sarah Underwood to head some of their online marketing campaigns. Many of Victory Poker’s tournaments and promotions still feature prizes such as dates with Play boy models and the chance to meet some of the Play mate models or talk to them.

Perhaps a female in a similar position to Liv Boeree is Anette Obrestad, who clearly made her way into the business not from sheer looks but from the skills that set her aside in the industry. The 22 year old became the youngest female to win the WSOPE in 2007 just days before her 19th birthday. She has also amassed more than $3 million in live tournament winnings – all of it built up from a bankroll from playing freerolls at online poker sites including PokerStars, UB.com and Full Tilt Poker.

Before the current crop of young, artificially marketed female poker players were breaking into the scenes, the majority of female poker was dominated by pros such as Lacey Jones, Vicky Coren and Annie Duke.

Annie Duke will always be one of the top female poker players of all time having won one WSOP bracelet, the World Series of Poker Champions in 2004, the National Heads up Poker Championship in 2010, her own book and more than $4.2 million in tournament winnings.

Vicky Coren, a team PokerStars pro member, while not having attained quite the same success as Duke in poker (just $1.4 million in live poker winnings) also has a profession as a writer for The Times, the Observer, the Daily Telegraph and a career as a TV presenter.

Bet Sizing in NLH Poker

Once you’ve fully understood the rules of no limit holdem and have enough experience to know which are the best hands pre-flop the next most important lesson in my opinion is bet sizing.

Bet sizing in poker means knowing precisely how much to bet or re-raise the pot in different situations and on different boards. In all honesty, you could get by playing online poker websites for real money without ever knowing the correct amount to bet size since a lot of it is pure common sense.

However if you NEVER both to learn correct bet-sizing in poker than you’ll eventually be leaking tons of chips and missing opportunities in your game.

Pre-flop Raising

Let’s start with the simplest part of the game, pre-flop.

When you open the raising in NLH with a solid hand such as pocket pairs or even suited connectors than you normally raise the pot 3x blinds + 1bb for each limper. For example, if we’re sat MP+1 in a 6-max game of $1/$2 and the big blind has limped in before us than I’ll raise $7 (3xBBs + 1 BB).

The reason for adding an extra amount to your raise for each limper is that you want to prevent them from getting pot-odds to calling your and outdrawing you on the flop. A lot of the time you’ll get marginal hands such as JQ or 56s limping into the pot and hitting a strong hand on the flop. Essentially, if you have the best hand pre-flop (e.g. KK) than you want to prevent this from happening or at least giving them negative odds for calling you.

3Betting pre-flop means re-raising an open-raise. In NLH, we always make our 3betting 3x the original raise. For instance if your opponent raised the pot $5 in a game of $1/$2 then you’ll want to re-raise to around $15. This is considered the optimum bet size for 3betting since it gives you maximum fold equity and call equity from mediocre hands whilst also limiting how many chips that you risk at any one time.

Continuation Betting/Betting the Flop

Regardless of whether you’re ahead or bluffing, you tend to get a lot more flexibility on the flop since you can slow-play, semi-bluff or bluff an entire range of hands and almost any board. Thus, whether you’re raising for value of bluffing a bet-size of around ½ to ¾ is appropriate.

Betting on the Turn

The turn is where things get a little tricky since there are lots of hands that I will slow play at this point or times when I will make min bets worth ¼ of the pot just to see where I stand and whether my opponent will call/re-raise me.

None the less, if you’re going to bet the turn for whatever reasons than a bet of ½ to pot size bet is normal.

Betting on the River

To keep things simple, when you’re ahead you should value bet your opponent anywhere between ¼ to ½ pot. If you’re behind, you should consider check/folding however a bluff should be a minimum of ½ pot sized – this also depends on whether your opponent is pot-committed however.

If you’re massively ahead and you sense weakness in your opponent than you might want to just tease him with a very small 1/5 – 1/3 min bet. This can also work as a post-oak bluff at the higher levels.

How to Build a Poker Bankroll in Online Poker

There are thousands of professional online poker players who are making well over $100,000 per year. Many of the top earners, including Tom “Durrrr” Dwan, Phil Ivey and Patrick Antonius make more than $1 million per month on average and are bankrolled up to around $15 – $20 million.

But all of these players had to start somewhere. Tom Dwan for example claimed to have built his now superfluous $20 million bankroll all from a small $50 deposit at one of the earlier poker sites to operate online, Paradise Poker.

For all new poker players who wish to emulate the type of success that these astute, young players have enjoyed, there are going to be some setbacks along the way and it can’t happen overnight. I can however provide my own tips as to the best way for you to build a poker bankroll and start making some decent income from online poker.

First of all, don’t make any deposits online until you are already a winning or even break-even player. Online poker is much trickier than most people give it credit for, and there are a number of strategies, concepts and maths that you will have to learn before you can even break-even in the micro stakes ring games. My suggestion is that you read as many poker strategy articles on the internet as possible or even download a couple of professional poker ebooks from sites such as DailyVariane.com or the PokereBookShop.com. Until you’re able to understand key components of the game such as table position, bluffing, expected value and pot odds, you’ll probably just end up losing any money that you deposit online.

After you’ve read up on how to play online poker profitable, try playing in the play money games or even freeroll tournaments at the biggest US poker sites such as Full Tilt Poker. Most poker sites even have special freerolls for new players with prizepools worth more than $1,000.

When you’re finally read to make a deposit online, don’t. Instead, visit IPM for a range of free poker money offers. IPM has a range of free bankrolls and offers for new players which give you a range of $50 and $100 free bankrolls at poker sites such as Titan Poker, PokerStars and Party Poker. The great thing about these offers is that they allow you to play real money poker and gain valuable experience from the games without having to risk any of your own money. This is basically free money given to you just to play and sign up at a particular poker site. What more could you ask for?

In terms of terms and conditions, this site does literally give you free money. But the conditions require you to pass a small 20 question quiz and there will also be limitations on how many hands you have to play until you can withdraw the money from your cashier. This is to prevent scammers from taking advantage of the free poker money offers and just withdrawing the money straight to their Paypal or Moneybookers account.

Continuation Betting

The continuation bet is one of the most common bluffs in online poker. A continuation bet literally means to make bet the flop after being the last pre-flop raiser.

There are many advantages to continuation betting flops. Most of these generally fall under the category of “aggressive” play. When you play aggressively in any poker game it generally gives you a better chance of winning. You can bluff more pots against opponents, range balance your hands, and even semi-bluff potential drawing hands or even Ax or over cards.

A typical situation when you will continuation bet the flop is when there is only one or two other opponents in the pot. In my experiences continuation betting isn’t profitable enough when there are more than two players in the pot since the chances that one of them manages to connect with the board is a lot stronger. With only one opponent in the pot however, the chances of them connecting strong enough with the board to call your bet is around 40%.

A standard bet-size for a continuation bet (also known as a cbet) is half-pot. If you pot size if $40 on the flop than a typical cbet should be $20. This is considered the optimum bet size for bluffing the flop since it is large enough to fold weak opponents yet not too high as to be needlessly risking chips. Bear in mind that if you place a half-pot continuation bet than it only needs to be successful one in three times to break-even. Of course you may wish to adjust the size of your continuation bet for different boards and opponents. For example, you’ll need to bet a little bit more against LAGs because they will be happier to float your bets.

A relatively unknown advantage of continuation betting is that if you make a continuation bet you are unlikely to get re-raised. This makes it a lot more profitable than bluffing in other streets. Think about this for a second, if your opponent has a very strong hand such as two-pair or full house than he is not going to want to play it thick and fast so early in the hand since it will give away his strength. Contrarily, if he has a weak hand than he is more likely to fold or “float” your call in the hope of catching something on the turn than to actually re-raise you. Re-raising you with a bluff is probably the worst thing that he could do right now, since it isn’t possible for him to have any read on you and you showed massive strength by raising pre-flop anyway. If he did try bluffing you with a re-raise than it would be negative EV from him.

A lot of people suggest that in the micro-stakes games in online poker (i.e. $0.01/$0.02 – $0.25/$0.50) you should be cbetting 80%+ of your hands. This is way too high in my opinion. Micro-stakes games are no where near as fishy as they used to be and most micro-stakes players will know what a “continuation bet” is and how to counter it. Generally speaking a continuation bet of 50%-80% is about right.

Finally, if you’re a new poker player look for a no deposit poker bonus than you should check out PokerBankrolls.org. This is one of the most authoritative sites on the internet for finding the best poker bonuses and it also provides information about re-load bonuses, US bonuses and others too.

Earn Free Seats to Live Poker Events

Have you ever wanted to earn free seats or packages to live poker events like the WSOP or English Poker Open? By signing up to BuyinBank.com, you can earn a free seat to a live event of your choosing just by signing up to a poker room and playing poker for real money.

The way Buy-In Bank works is that that you sign up to a poker room using their affiliate links and as you play you earn yourself Grinder Points – otherwise known as rewards points. The more games you play, the more grinder points you can earn; then once you earn a certain amount of grinder points you can select a package to a live event such as the Aussie Millions or EPT.

The best thing about buyinbank is that it allows recreational and amateur poker players qualify to live events without having to sit through hours of misery in the turbo satellites, or hit a 1 in a million shot of winning a sponsored freeroll full of nitty TAG players and ultra-aggression in the early stages. Everyone knows these types of games are extremely hard to fair well in, let alone make it all the way to the final table and finish 1st place. Instead, you can earn a free live package simply by playing cash games, SNGs or MTTs at your own level and over an unlimited period of time. There are no time restrictions in terms of how soon you must earn your points by. As long as you reach a certain amount of points, the live package is yours. I think buyinbank.com is particularly worthwhile for cash game players who have a slim chance of doing well in a large field MTTs or 10,000 man freerolls.

Members who sign up to buyinbank.com can also participate in online poker leagues. Starting on December 4th, the winner of the 20-week tournament can choose from a list of prizes:

$1,500 World Series of Poker® buy-in + $2000 spending money
€1000+100 Spanish Poker Tour buy-in + $2000 spending money
£1000+70 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour buy-in + $2000 spending money
€600+60 Spanish Poker Championship buy-in + $2000 spending money

About BuyinBank.com

Buyinbank is a fairly new business with the intended mission of offering live tournament sponsorships to poker events around the world. They provide casual players with easy access to events such as the English Poker Open, Spanish Poker Championships, EPT and WSOP.

How to Beat No-Limit Hold ‘Em 6-max Cash Games by Bill Vosti

eBook Price: $50. Buy it now.

Who is this for? If you’re looking to beat 6-max cash games using an extremely aggressive approach, then this book is definitely for you. It is one of the highest rated cash game books on 2+2, and teaches you everything you need to know about floats/squeeze play/cbets/bluff-raise/stats etc in the modern game.

How to Beat No-Limit Hold ‘Em 6-max Cash Games Review

The author of this book has made over $250,000 at the 6-max cash tables online in the last two years, and the majority of this was from 2/4, 3/6 and even 5/10 games at PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. Hence, the credit and advanced strategy in this book are up to date, and quite frankly devastating.

I thought this book was brilliant. By no means is it a beginner’s book, it is fairly advanced. Basically it teaches you how to dominate the mid-stakes cash tables and take advantage of the different player types, such as regs, fish and TAGs. Unlike other eBooks, which tend to advocate a TAG approach to games, Vosti push a very aggressive and loose strategy to exploit regulars at the tables. Examples of the type of advanced moves it promotes includes mixing up your game with strong moves like shoving draws, bluff-raising pre-flop and floating raises against TAG weak CO stealers.

At 170 pages long, you get good value for a measly $50. You are taught how to pull of killer moves like float play, check-raises, bluff-raises, barrels, and how to exploit opponents based on their HUD stats. Various software aids are introduced in the book for helping you calculate equity in pots, range merging, and there are a number of pre-flop hand charts to reap advantage of.
The book also comes with 3 instructional videos of Vosti playing online (totalling 1 and a half hours). You get to watch how the author adapts and changes his game for the micro NL25, NL200 and high stakes NL600 games.
In conclusion, this book isn’t perfect. Occasionally some of the topics are over a little quickly and can leave you bereft of a little theoretical underpinnings. But ignoring this, it’s still a must-read book for cash game players and will teach you how to really step up your game like a true post-flop – bluffing more pots and increase your win-rates. LAG. You get all this (180 pages plus 1.5 hrs of videos) for just $50, so I really recommend buying this now.

How to Shake the Online Poker Money Tree by Andrew Kasch

eBook Price: $39.00. Buy it Now.

Who is this for? Beginner poker players who want to know how to play different forms of poker profitably. The lengthy e-book teaches No Limit Hold’em, 7-Card Stud, Omaha Hi-Lo, Pot Limit Omaha, and Half-pot limit Badugi. There are also two chapters on poker tournament strategy towards the end; but overall it is intended for beginners.

How to Shake the Online Poker Money Tree Review

When you first download this book, you’ll see it contains 17 chapters which makes it very big for an eBook. The core idea of the book is to put across how you can make money in online poker. It starts off by identifying what makes poker beatable, such as EV, making cost-equity decisions etc. The first sections of the poker book prepare you and deal with pre-game elements such as table selection, position etc. Further in, it details how to play hands pre-flop.

In terms of teaching the game, Kasch provides a full-proof strategy for the different forms of poker including No Limit Hold’em, 7-Card Stud, Omaha Hi-Lo, Pot Limit Omaha, half-pot limit Badugi and multi-table tournaments. The advice and strategy is solid and details a infinite number of situations with anecdotes and hand history examples (sort of like Harrington on Holdem if you’re familiar). His tournament strategy section registers home the idea folding 95% of hands and he opines a pretty TAG playing style suited for beginners.

The downside to this book is that it teaches a robotic autarkic way of playing cash game poker, with rules and strict playing patterns for different situations and streets. This made it hard for me to read through but I guess the objective of the book is to make money and these observations and situations do create profitable EV situations. Remember that Kasch is a very successful semi-pro poker player and all his opinions and advice is quality.

In conclusion, personally I didn’t enjoy reading this book as much as the NL Workbook and the Poker Blueprint but for $39 it won’t cause any damage, especially if you’re looking to boost your skills in a broad variety of poker games.

Sit N Go Pro by Johnny Rothman

eBook Price: $47. Buy It Now.

Who is it for? The SNG Pro eBook is recommended for beginners and micro stakes SNG players looking to beat the game. The Sit N Go Pro package includes everything to turn you into profitable player in low-mid stakes SNG games. It includes a 41-page PDF handbook that covers the basic theory/concepts, 1.20 hours of video footage, starting hand charts and a 15 minute MP3 interview with Rothman. It focuses only on SNGS and doesn’t contain any strategy for NLH cash games or MTTs.

Sit N Go Pro Review

Rothman’s Sit N Go Pro system is well known in poker forums and is one of the better eBooks for learning how to play sit and goes profitably.

The first part of this eBook contains a 41-page PDF handbook which teaches all the introductory concepts of SNGs (most of which many players should already be familiar with). But, while the first half of the book covers only the basics, once you dwelve into the second half Rothman begins discussing more difficult situations and advanced concepts such as positional play, exposing short stacks out of position, tournament equity, ICM models and outplaying opponents on different street or defending against LAGs. A lot of this should already register to experienced players, but it’s must read if you’re a beginner.

Effectively, the SNG Pro system contains a full-proof plan for playing SNGs at all stakes – and while it claims to help you make $1400 in one night, in truth you should be able to become very profitable reg with a decent ROI. A starting hands/position chart is included which outlines how to play hole cards in different positions at the table. This is a great reference for beginners and worth the time looking at especially since it avoids getting into nasty pots and leaking chips. After reading the book alone, you’ll be able to beat the small stakes SNGs up to $10 and understand most of the theory applicable to mid-stakes SNGs.

If you already knew most of the SNG ebook material, then the instructional videos are where SNG Go Pro makes its money. Users get to watch 4 extensive videos of Rothman playing short-handed mid-stakes sit and goes as he explains every move in detail without any gaps or editing in play. He provides tips for analysing opponents’ tendencies, how to extract maximum value on streets, check-raising and even navigating around difficult 3bet situations. The analysis of opponents is exquisite, and understanding Rothman’s line of thinking and how to plan ahead is pure brilliance. The videos teach many advanced concepts, for example the 2nd 40 minute long video shows how to play SNGs from beginning till end. The 3rd video teaches you how to avoid the most common mistakes and how to exploit the mistakes that many SNG players make, which again is top notch stuff because this is the strategy that will earn you more money than you currently do now. Lastly, there’s a short 15 minute MP3 interview with Rothman who answers a series of questions on SNG poker strategy.

In conclusion, there is nothing ground-breaking in this SNG Pro System but for just a measly $47 I definitely recommend buying this if you’re interested in learning a full-proof system for beating SNGs and exploiting low stakes regs. You have literally nothing to lose and the starting hand charts and videos together are worth more than this without even getting the 40 page ebook itself.
